RYA Watchleader
This course is designed to teach you the skills to be able to lead a deck watch on a sail training vessel.
We run this course for individuals on sail training voyages, during our teeenage sailing weeks and on the return voyage from the Tall Ships Race at the end of August.
- to prepare the vessel for sea on deck and down below
- how to organise a watch to accomplish the deck work
- navigate during your watch (i.e. plot a fix, maintain the log book, know the rules of the road etc.)
- use pilotage skills such as using leading lines, clearing lines, transits and soundings.
- how to get weather information and record it properly
- how to victual stores for a voyage
- how to maintain and repair the vessel and keep yourself and others safe while doing so
- how to safely use the tender to the vessel
- how to proceed during emergency situations
- how to distribute the workload evenly amongst your watch
